Wine, Food and Farmgate trail

Wine, food and farmgate trail

There are many fabulous wine, food and farmgate experiences hidden away throughout the Mornington Peninsula, especially in the hinterland where little country roads reveal some of Victoria’s top vineyards, farmgates, restaurants and producers.

The best have been brought together in the new ‘Wine, Food and Farmgate’ Trail. It’s the most extensive wine and food program ever created on the peninsula, featuring chefs and restaurants, vignerons and vineyards, growers, orchardists and gourmet storeowners.

The hinterland hills are laced with vines, olive groves and intimate vineyard restaurants. Cellar door experiences kindle many a conversation over a glass or two of world-ranking Pinot Noir.

Stellar cellar doors

There are more than 50 cellar doors stretching from Mornington and Moorooduc in the north, through the famed Red Hill and Main Ridge, to Fingal in the south. The gentle maritime climate puts a very individual stamp on our wines, as do the many little microclimates.

An epicurean eden

Fine wine and abundant local produce have proved to be an irresistible temptation for top city chefs seeking a sea change. They’ve raised the bar on regional dining, with one restaurant holding two Chef’s Hats, and three restaurants each holding one Chef’s Hat.

Wine, Food and Farmgate trail

Freshest at the farmgate

The fabulous food experience on the Mornington Peninsula all starts at the farmgates, which grow and create a vast range of gourmet produce.

Red Hill and Main Ridge are the best spots for luscious fruit, particularly pick-your-own strawberries (November to April) and cherries (December and January). And don’t leave Red Hill and Main Ridge without visiting the dairies – their handmade cheeses are legendary, particularly with bread from a local bakery. Baxter is home to vegetable growers, so watch for organic produce; salad greens, herbs, heirloom carrots, beans and pumpkin, depending on the season.

Red Hill Show

Enjoy the fairground atmosphere at Red Hill Show!

Who doesn’t remember the fun had as a kid at various country shows?  Well Red Hill Show offers the opportunity to re-live your youth and give your kids the benefit of the same experience without being a million miles away!

Agricultural Shows are the most popular form of family entertainment in Australia today, and here on the Mornington Peninsula we have one of the best. Every year thousands of people attend the Red Hill Show to enjoy a great family day and be part of this wonderful community celebration.

This will be the 86th annual Red Hill Show (the only event of its kind on the Mornington Peninsula) and, as always, the entertainment, exhibitions, demonstrations and animals will be top class.

When the Show began in 1922, local people exhibited apples, flowers and vegetables along with the best butter, cooking and preserves from home and farm kitchens.Show Day was declared a local holiday by the Shire of Flinders and a special train ran from Melbourne to bring spectators down to Red Hill, the journey taking over three hours.

Over the years, horses, sheep, cattle and alpacas were included in the Show – each new introduction indicating the changing face of farming on the Mornington Peninsula. More recently we have added wine, avocados, olives, berries and cheese to the list of produce coming from this most acclaimed agricultural and horticultural area, and some of the very best local produce will be available at the Show for tasting and buying.

Nowadays, this iconic event provides something for all the family with a wide range of events which will captivate everyone, dad’s and boy’s included!  Just some of things to entertain everyone include:

  • The Whip Industries motocross show
  • Fruitcake and home made cheese judging competition
  • Working dog demonstrations
  • Shearing competition
  • Childrens petting opportunities
  • Mingle with miniature goats
  • Learn about pet rats (!)
  • Animal shows
  • Wood chop competition
  • Music, food and other demonstrations

Family tickets are $50 (2 adults, 3 children 6-18yo), Adults $15 and Children $10.  5 years and under are free, and Students and Pensioners get in for $10.  Free parking provided.

Gates open to the public at 8.30am, Saturday March 22. Show concludes at 5.00pm.

Mornington Peninsula Lunch Green Olive at Red Hill

The view out over the vineyard – Green Olive at Red Hill has a beautiful setting for lunch as well as great local food to boot!

Looking for somewhere new to stop off for a great Mornington Peninsula lunch spot?  If so then why not check out the relaxed atmosphere at Green Olive at Red Hill!

We stopped there last weekend and found it to be a great little hidden gem.  A local hobby farm with wine grapes, olive trees, sheep and chooks all packed into their 27 acre plot.  They serve their own produce as well as food from surrounding local farms, and have a beautiful setting in Red Hill to have a quiet drink and to enjoy said savouries!

A family run business, Green Olive seeks not only to be local but to be full sustainable as well.  This can probably be best summed up in their own words –

We capture all our own water and store it in large above ground tanks. All irrigation for the farm comes from the large dam that collects water from the natural spring and general water runoff. All waste water is processed naturally in an aeration treatment plant and then irrigated onto the paddocks through subsurface irrigation.

All kitchen leftovers are fed to our chooks or composted with chook manure then returned to the garden. Our paper waste is shredded and composted. Where possible we reduce the need for glass and plastic containers, but if we do use them they are commercially recycled.

Almost all our cooking is done in our woodfire oven, with wood collected from fallen timber on the property or, if necessary, specially sourced plantation timber. Installed on the roof of the Farm Shop are photovoltaic panels to generate enough power for us to use and any extra power is returned back to the grid.

So there you have it … great food, great setting and an awesome little family run farm committed to sustainability.  Add in the great local wine region and what other reason do you need for a trip down the Mornington Peninsula? 🙂
